Trying Something (Else) New: The Anderson’s (for my lawn and garden)

I don’t know how fertilzer brand The Anderson’s came to my consciousness. Could’ve been that somebody in one of the many lawn tips YouTube videos mentioned it. Maybe they served me an ad on YouTube or in my Instagram feed in between all the lawn pros and gardeners I follow. Maybe divine intervention? Maybe an angel appeared to me in a dream, or in a vision sitting at the foot of my bed and said, “when you wake up, Search The Anderson’s grub control and their full season lawn maintenance program,” and then I awoke and did what the angel said.

Or maybe on my many drives to and from University of Alabama, I drove by their huge facility in Maumee, Ohio and maybe I looked it up on my phone and declared, “aha … these people are serious about helping people who love their lawn.”

What “hooked” me right away was that, hey, this stuff isn’t sold in stores. I don’t know why my brain thinks “not sold in stores” means “better”, but it does. When I find stuff that feels “outside of the mainstream”, it makes me feel like I’m joining a secret club.

Back up … I’ve always been obsessed with my lawn. But I’ve also been obsessed with minimal or no chemicals and fertilizers. Because I had little kids. I followed all the recipes in Jerry Baker‘s Green Grass Magic. I pulled weeds by hand or just lived with weeds. Now? My kids are grown and I have lawn-envy (ever heard “the grass is always greener”? Well, it was).

Don’t get me wrong … my lawn’s always been amazing even without chemicals and without watering (I *never* water my lawn …ever … because I want deep root growth).

Thing is, I’m not getting any younger. What I could do when I was a 35-year-old and 45-year-old homeowner, I’m finding it’s a little more tiring now that I’m an almost 53-year-old homeowner.

I decided, “enough is enough,” and, “I’m getting too old for this sh__,” and was going to go with Scott’s 4-bag season system until … whoa … The Anderson’s got my attention.

Oh, right … this spring … I had grubs … bad … and after the winter thaw I had lots and lots of grub-damaged areas so I knew Spring 2026 was going to be kill-the-grubs, plant seed, water alot, and rebuild my lawn. I knew I had my work cut out for me.

The Anderson’s has seed. The Anderson’s has grub control. The Anderson’s has early season pre-emergent stuff. They have liquid for spot spraying and I just got their Weed & Feed that was has 24-0-16 on the bag, which is different than what I see at the store, and because their website says they have, “a commitment to delivering the best lawn care solutions to homeowners” . . . I trust them. And I only just met them.

I wonder if in the halls of The Anderson’s they always say the “the” like “the Ohio State” always says the “the.”

The Anderson’s boxes arrive at my house in neat and tidy presentations like I see on people’s porches when they order from Chewy (pet stuff … which is a good example to prove I’m not crazy … if people actually get mail-order pet stuff even tho a million stores sell pet stuff … well, I’m not so insane to get “lawn stuff” by mail, too).

I’ve only been an “Anderson’s Man” for 3-months but I’m happy to report . . . the grubs are gone. The seed grew into grass. I definitely have fewer weeds and way less crabgrass. Spot treating weeds with the liquid spray took care of those.

And today (6/12/2026) I spread the Weed & Feed and now I wait … hoping to see results in 20-30 days.

Gonna be an exciting summer … watching grass grow.
