The Top-10 Songs of All (My) Time, Part 2

Here’s the only song on my Top-10 list that I’m embarrassed about. But …it’s on my Top-10. Emphasis “my”. I can’t help it. This song gets me energized.

It’s “Der Komissar” by After the Fire. Quite different than the majority of the songs on my top ten and knowing this probably wouldn’t make it on any other top-100 (or even too-200) list, I think this song is the definition of “wall of sound.” Incredible bass line. Stops and starts. Horns and shouts. Kinda tells a story. That’s a stretch.  But can’t you see this as a James Bond 007 movie song with even a little rewrite? It would beat quite a few James Bond songs, actually.

Just stop with your, “But what about the Falco version?”  I know about that version and I know about a third version by Laura Branigan reworked and renamed “Deep in the Dark.”  I think the fact there are three versions shows how contagious the bass line and the hook that multiple artists said, oh, wow, I want to make a hit record with that.

If I’m having a bad day, “Der Kommissar” can fix it. If I ever make a movie, I know exactly how I’ll use this song …it will be in a scene where the slightly-awkward main character tries to be really cool and it will involve some great physical humor.

For those about to leave an angry comment …don’t worry. As the countdown reveals my top-8, you won’t be disappointed.
