Today’s a good day. No. A great day. Because Weezer has a new single … “Shine Again”, written by Weezer’s drummer, Patrick Wilson, and is the first song released off their yet-to-be-named and yet-to-be-color-coded new Album. All part of a new Weezer tour this Fall (September/October and the Detroit date is 9/23).
This Blog, my Blog, isn’t where Weezer fans come for breaking news, but if there’s some fans who just love more gushing, glowing things written about Weezer, you could do worse than DonKowalewski.com.
“Shine Again” feels like an anthem. Maybe not for you, but for me … a 52-year-old who loads and unloads the “dishwasher” with great precision and pride, and someone who knows a thing or two about a “dog walk.”
I quoted lyrics from the new song, if you’re wondering.
Is the song about me? Is the song about being in a rut and feeling dull, but a reminder that I’m great and will “shine again?”
Is it a song about someone going through something and wishing they were like their old selves and Rivers wants them to know they’re “great” and not to forget it?
It’s not me, by the way. The dishwasher and walking the dog never gets me down … it’s what’s life’s all about. If you’re like me and you have the health, the time, and peace of mind when you do small chores and do them well, as long as you’re not a shut-in and have friends, food, and shelter … that’s super lucky.
For me, anytime Weezer does anything, it makes me happy.
“Shine Again” sounds like old Weezer, but with lyrics written by a 55-year-old River (even tho Rivers said the drummer wrote the lyrics) and in this KROQ interview, he said the lyrics speak to . . .
“Confidence in ourselves, again. And trusting ourselves as a ___________________ … and the sun is shining within us, and to look there (inside ourselves) as inspiration.”
Regular readers know I’m an emo (emotional) guy and, damn … sure. I’ll make “Shine Again” my anthem.
I know two people, right now, going through some stuff, and I hope they’ll find this song as an anthem, too.
As of the writing of this Blog entry, I’ve listened to the song 13 times. Almost commited it entirely to memory. I think I’ll make this the first song I learn on my ukele (see my New Years Resolutions).
Weezer makes me happy. They’ve been making me happy since 1994 while delivering pizzas at Michigan State University, cruising around in my burgundy, rusty, Ford Escort. 32 years later? Still doing it.
