I Feel Bad I Wanted More Calm

Confession …over the years I’ve thought to myself, “Dan Dickerson is WAAAAAY to excited about _____________”.  Shame on me. Think about his life for the last 11 years. Day in. Day out. Watching and talking about a baseball team that loses …and loses …and loses. A baseball team with no hope. Aging stars and stars that faded. There were a couple seasons with a hundred or more losses. Sure, the guy has a “dream job” and probably makes a good living (not Bezos sized paychecks but still a pretty good salary), but in a 162-game season, he spends literally MONTHS on the road living out of hotel rooms. MLB road trips can be as long as 14 days.

Anyone who’s traveled for work, like alot, knows “traveling for work” is not glamorous or fun …no matter how positive and optimistic a person is, or how much a person hates their family (yes, I’ve met guys who purposely keep a job with tons of travel because these guys just can’t handle life-at-home …it’s sad).

Back to my confession and my open apology to Dan Dickerson. I should’ve been more forgiving. So what that, maybe a few years ago, in game-94 and with the Tigers holding on to a 1-run lead in the 10th inning and we get a ground out to third and Dickerson screamed as if it was the final out of the World Series …so what? Get excited. Why wouldn’t you? You saw enough fielding errors, bad throws, and 10-run Tiger losses where there was zero excitement to be had. I should’ve had sympathy for you rather than thinking, “calm down …this team is still 30 games under .500 and 20 games out of a playoff spot.”

What do I tell my kids all the time? What do I try and do every day at work …or with my side-hustle Donnie Jalapeno Salsa business …or with anything? I say do it with positivity and optimism and joy.

Shame on me for thinking bad things about Dan Dickerson. Because now? Now I’m LOVING Dan’s energy and that his excitement matches the excitement of the players and the Tigers fans. Not bandwagon fans. OK. Maybe a little. But I don’t think these are bandwagon fans. I think the Tiger fans are like a dry, yellow lawn and then you get a couple days of rain and …BOOM …the grass is green again and looks alive, plush, and you can’t wait to get outside.

The Tigers are like that lawn and I’m loving it. And Dan Dickerson is loving it. And his joy, as highlighted in this article and all the linked “calls” is contagious.

Joy. Excitement. Positivity. It’s contagious.
